As dentists, our priority is to always salvage a natural tooth if the situation allows. One way of achieving this is to perform a root canal treatment (also called Endodontics).

Root canal treatment is a procedure designed to stop an infection in the pulp of your tooth from spreading further. Infections are sustained through issues like severe tooth decay, damage and trauma and if allowed to go untreated, can eventually lead to a dental abscess forming, which potentially causes a great deal of discomfort. If root canal treatment is not carried out it may result in the tooth having to be taken out (Extracted).

Our team will use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to preserve as much of your tooth as possible and educate you on how to prevent the need for a root canal in the future. If you are feeling a bit nervous about treatment, please let us know as our compassionate and understanding team will do everything they can, to help you feel at ease.

What should I expect from root canal treatment?

After your dentist has thoroughly examined the tooth, it can be cleaned and filled to stop the infection from spreading further. An anesthetic is used to numb the area and the filling material will seal the tooth to stop bacteria from getting in thereafter. A restoration such as a traditional amalgam filling, aesthetic white filling or a crown is then used to restore the tooth to its full function. Typically, a root canal is performed over two visits, the first to clean the infected area and the second to fill the tooth.

What makes a root canal so great for salvaging a tooth?

  • Avoid complications associated with a missing tooth: having a root canal performed will save your tooth from extraction, which consequently protects you from a myriad of other issues. These can include jawbone shrinkage, complications with eating and drinking, speech impediments and problems with your oral hygiene.
  • Be pain-free: whilst it’s common for patients to have felt no symptoms prior to the need for a root canal treatment arising, there are times when infection can be a huge source of pain. Once root canal treatment has been performed, you can be pain-free and feel great inside and out.
  • Anaesthetic ensures you’re comfortable throughout: thanks to the wonders of anaesthetic, the area will be numb whilst your dentist works their magic, and most patients report that root canal treatment feels similar to receiving a filling.
